All About Our Crew
U.S. Sailing certified instructors will coach campers and are assisted by Leadership Academy camp counselors and junior counselors. Our expansive sailing leadership team is there to ensure that campers are being looked after and have the information and confidence they need to set off on an exciting sailing journey. Just as with all of our Leadership Academy camps, at Nashville Sail Camp we fuse learning, safety and fun together to create the ultimate summer camp experience!
Your young campers will also be able to look up to Teen Leaders that were once learning the ropes of sailing with Leadership Academy as well! It has been delightful for us at Nashville Sail Camp to grow our summer camp staff from within, hiring our long-time campers who are familiar with the lessons of Sail Camp. Sailing is a skill that can be built upon for a lifetime, and it is wonderful to see those foundations being formed as our campers return to deck season after season. Teen Leaders are role models and offer their service back to camp, and our hope is they will continue to grow within Leadership Academy, becoming certified with US Sailing and joining camp staff ranks themselves.
Sail Camp Structure
Our sailors will be divided into groups depending on their age and skill level. This structure encourages sailors to master each skill level, developing confidence and comfort with sailing techniques before advancing to another level. Each year, we encourage and often see campers return for more aquatic adventures and to build upon what they learned in previous sessions. Each day of camp brings the promise of sailing, and all age groups will have time to cool off in the water, participate in camp crafts and games to fully enjoy the idyllic setting that Hamilton Creek Marina offers.
Sailing Levels:
Opti 1: Sailors ages 7-8
Our youngest campers will take the helm for the first time in the Opti fleet! These small but mighty sailors will learn the basics of sailing safety and maneuvers, steering and control, capsize recovery, rigging and teamwork in pairs on board their boats.
Opti 2: Sailors ages 9 and older
This second level is for beginner sailors ages 9 and older and Opti 1 graduates that wish to increase their skill level. Campers learn all of the basic sailing safety skills and practices from Opti 1, but also participate in more complex skills such as sailing an upwind course, gybing and single-handed sailing.
Sunfish: Sailors 11 and up
Our Sunfish campers are seasoned sailors, and their choices of activities reflect that! Sunfish sailors will explore the water on leisure sunfish boats, one of the world’s most popular day sailing boats. They will begin their expeditions in pairs, and then are encouraged to try single-handing the boats by themselves by the end of the week. Sunfish campers will spend most of their time on the water with both morning and afternoon sailing sessions! There are also opportunities to build up racing skills for our more experienced sailors.
Whether your child is part fish and loves water sports or has never set sail before, they are bound to get their sea legs and fall in love with sailing at Leadership Academy. With our colorful sails flying high, we are so ready to welcome them as our first mates and set off on spectacular adventures this summer! Register for Nashville Sail Camp today!
